The radiator is held down by studs that screw into the bottom of the tank, then pass through holes in the casting. The castle nuts (fine thread) on the bottom of the casting are cotter keyed and hold a washer and spring in place. You've all ready figured out this whole assembly is recessed vertically about 4 inches. How they got the orginal cotter keys in place is a mystery to me. BUT to get them out will try your patience! Sometimes you luck out by twisting the whole rig out of the bottom of the radiator. Good luck and try not to round off the bottom nut. Dick
