Mitch........Sorry for your mishap. I restore classic cars, and cracked engine blocks are common, particularly on flathead sixes and eights. This is usually due to water distribution tubes that are rusted out and cause the rear cylinders to overheat and crack the block. What I do is this: if there is no water in the oil and the engine runs well, I have a machine shop drill small holes at the end of the crack(s) and install crack plugs. The theory is that these small holes and plugs stop further cracking. Then I use Copper Coat sealer on the head gasket and put a good block sealer (NAPA brand works well) in the cooling system. Generally speaking, the engine neeeds to be disassembled to do the work and, in your case, you are going to rebuild the engine anyway. I, personally, would avoid the welding procedure, as further problems are possible. I did this to a '40 Pontiac several years ago and all is still well. Hope this is of some help.
