From what I understand, a crack on the side of the block is fixable, but on top where the head gasket goes, then you should discard the block. Either way, you would need to take it to an engine place, and have them properly heat it before welding, slowly cooling to keep the block from cracking along side the weld. It would have to be totally disassembled to do this, then have the block surface machined. I'd look around for a parts tractor. If you are lucky, you can find a super C for about $500 that isn't stuck. It would be alot cheaper in the long run.
