In our shop in the good old days when these were the tractor of choice this was a common problem in heavy tillage, we would advise the owner to let us take the rear frame/transmission/axles apart and check all the bearings, the old saying a ounce of prevention was worth a pound of cure really applied to this. The axle bearings were the most often failing and the bull gear would slowly grind a groove in bottom of main case. We patched the bottom as best we could, welding or even making a metal plate and bolting over the hole with small short bolts and a homemade gasket to seal it, this was before silicone sealant came out. If you are arc welding use nickel rod and drill a 1/4" hole at each end of crack or corner to help weld heat stress. LOL
