A swamp cooler is a generic term for an evaporative cooling system. It works like this:
There is a large enclosed reservoir on top of the cap which holds ~ 4" water in the bottom. There is a small motor with ~10 rod attached. The rod, which has a notch at the end, attaches to a plastic cylinder (~ 6" dia. X 25" long) which has a plastic gear around its circumference. This is where the notched rod actuates the turning of the cylinder as it moves back and forth. The cylinder has absorbent pads and, as it rotates slowly, the pads pick up water. In front of the reservoir is a large opening for air to pass and a large 4 speed fan which sucks air from the box into the cab; hence, evaporative cooling. The rod motor has 2 speeds supposedly for different humidity settings. It's really pretty neat, and it all works; however, I doubt it will be too effective during a 95 F, 90% humidity afternoon in north Georgia.
