Some of this sniping may be what is called proxy bidding. If I understand this correctly you can set it to up your bid automatically by a preset amount over the current high bid. People who really want something often use this method and set the upper limit of their bid. There are posts on tractor talk and site suggestions about a fellow who posted a Case LA on e-bay and the Yt auction with no reserve on either and did not list it subject to prior sale.
