I would stick with the generator. It won't cost much to get it fixed and it's all you need. Also, the problem may be your voltage regulator. The voltage regulator must have a good ground otherwise, it will not charge the battery. I had to run a ground wire from the mounting lug of the regulator on one of my tractors to get it to charge. After painting and then mounting the regulator the ground was just not good enough. As to the alternator, it will charge the battery much faster and run more things, but there is nothing to run on an A except the lights, as it likely has a magneto so needs nothing for the ignition. I have two tractors with alternators. I have to pull the carb throttle rod back to race the engine on both of them to get the alternators to start charging. If you go to the alternator, get the samllest pulley you can, and get one that will energize at low RPM.

What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
