Hello all, I took the left side of my '47 M apart to replace the Bull Pinion brgs. on that side this morn. I thought I would be "in and out" in no time but got a little surprise. When I did the right side last fall I replaced both brake bands and the seal. When I took it apart I found the new seal already leaking and just a little lube on the new band. I rocked the brake drum and it had alot of play both up and down and in and out. I took it down the rest of the way and found that the brgs. had been replaced already. The outer brg has "hogged out" the bull cage (in and out play, repacement required) but I feel the the carrier splines have been abused to the point that they are tapered out, causing the the bull pinion shaft to oscillate, thus causing the excess stress on that outer brg, and seal failure. If I just pop in a new brg. without addressing the looseness at the carrier splines, I will ruin an expensive brg. and bull cage. Kow much play have you folks experienced in the past...I suppose I'm in for a new carrier...OUCH!
