Here's how we checked them at the JD dealership I once worked at-- jack up the rear of the tractor until the tire is off the ground, put your hand on the axle and housing and let the jack down real fast. If there is any movement between the axle and housing you have problems. If you have oil leaking past the seals that is a good indicator something is wrong also, or it could just be an old seal leaking. A more technical method is to use a dial indicator and check for play up and down on the axle shaft.
