Axle bearings can be checked/replaced through pto hole in back of tractor, drain lube of rear, remove pto, jack up one side, remove wheel, twist axle with big pipe wrench to remove cap screw on inside with breaker bar & socket, use a spacer between one side and other gear bolt to push the axle out of spline of bull gear, you can change the inside bearing of the axle, then check the outer and reverse this method. You have to drive the axle & outer back in axle housing with care, also use a large/long pry bar and get the bull gear started back on axle. We did this many times at IH dealer back in 60/70 with mounted pickers, will work on M-SM-400-560.
