The reason your tractor won't come out of gear if you have a little torque agaist your transmission (headed up hill in forward gear) is the fact that planatery gears will not inherently not turn backwards. This being the case If your TA clutch hangs just a little it will keep a little torque agains the gears in your transmission. It dosen't take much to keep you from slipping your tractor out of gear. I have 3 1956 IH tractor with the mechanical TA and I have them adjusted to IH Spec. Occasionally they will not want to come out of gear. The reason pulling the TA back will usually release the torque is that when you pull the lever back you actually pull it back a little further that the clutch pedel does.
