You can check the serial number that was stamped on the engine block too.

Look just below the #1 spark plug for a flat area, clean it and read the number stamped on it.
If the motor is orginal the number should be the same as the tractor, or somewhere close.
The serial number on the A started with FAA, while the B started with FAB.

Someone could have changed the seat mounting brackets through the years as Steven@ad stated.

As far as the sheet metal having an A on it, someone could have put a hood from an A onto a B.

Yes a wide front from an A can be put onto a B, but the models B or BN did NOT come from the factory with the wide frontend mounted on them.

You will find that a lot of the parts are interchangeable between the two models.

There is a fellow that goes by Gene b that post on this board, he has a lot of knowledge about these models and what parts are innerchangeable between the two.

Both the A and B models are very good little tractors, great for mowing large lawns etc.
