There should be in the archives of this site, a complete description of how to do the changeover. I changed my SMTA over to 12 volts. Got a used GM alternator from the wrecking yard, used the generator bracket turned upside down for the lower mount bolt. Had to change the belt for one a bit longer. I used the original top tightner but drilled and tapped the upper thermostat housing on the foreward side for that end. Works great without modifying hood. Not a lot of adjustment though. The arguement goes on and on about converting or not. Other post may well be right that a 6 volt system in good shape will work fine. Most guys who have converted over would never go back. I have done the SMTA and a JD 430. The 430 was a slow starter before. Have had no problems with either. Good luck. If you can find the conversion description done by Bob M it will lead you right through it.
