When I bought my SMTA about 15 yrs ago, it already had a 12v batt, but i had to change the voltage reg at least 3 times in about 5 or 6 years. So I bought a one wire alt. from an alt shop in Austin. I had to change to neg ground, etc. In cooler weather, the motor wouldn't rev up past 1000 rpm until warm, so the batt did not always stay up. I solved this by installing a standard 2 wire plug in the socket, taped one wire off, and ran the other wire to a momentary switch placed in a hole on the steering wheel post. One hit of this switch starts it charging.
