The diagnosis was either "I don't know" or "something messed up in the reverse drum". Spent a week of nights putting in another tranny (had to build a different driveshaft) only to find out that I still had the same problem. Come to find out, the $2 spring had holds the starter drive gear away from the flywheel was broken. Yep - felt real stupid! That was about 12 years ago and my buddies that helped me swap trannys (then swap them back) haven't forgot it yet. I still don't know anything about automatic transmissions, but I'll never forget the sound of a starter gear sliding back into the flywheel! Happens to the best of us, Mitch
