Kirk - Whatever you do, DO NOT attempt to polarize the alternator!! It doesn't require it, and attempting to do so can destroy the electronics inside. To test whether the alternator is working, connect your multimeter across the two battery terminals and note the reading. It should show a little over 12 volts if the battery is good. Now start the motor, run it briefly up to full RPM, then throttle back to about 1/2 speed. Now note the reading on the multimeter again. If the alternator is working the meter should indicate somewhere between 13.5 and 14.5 volts.
