Yes, the pointer and mark on the pulley line up when the points open and deliver the spark to #1. You can get pretty close by watching the points as you turn the distributor. But get a timing light, they don't cost much and are great fun to watch as you adjust the distributor (it helps to rub some chalk or white paint into the pulley mark).
