How many cells does it have? A lead/acid battery will give roughly 2 volts per cell (actually a little better than 2). A 12 volt battery will have 6 cells. If you have two 12 volt batteries in series (one grounded with its + side attached to the - side of the other and the + side of the second battery connected to the electrical system), you will have 24 volts between the + side of the second battery and ground, even if the positive cable is disconnected. You should read 12 volts across either battery even if they are connected. Hope this helps.
