After you check for bad regulator as Bob instructed, unhook all the wires from the generator, loosen the belt, and hook a set of booster cables from the battery to the GEN post on the generator and ground the other one to the case. If the generator picks up speed fast and turns like an electric motor, it is good. If it messes around about picking up speed, it won't charge good.
