Dave, I am in the process of restoring my "A" with the thermosiphon system, Once I knocked the sleeves out I could not believe the amount of crud blocking all but 2 of the holes that allow the coolant from the lower radiator hose up into the block. I dont see how adding a water pump would have corrected this condition but it would have been fairly simple to clean the crud out without taking the engine apart, If you were to take off the lower water housing (The part the lower radiator hose hooks on)and take a pressure washer wand into the passage you could clean all the blockage out, This passage goes from the front of the block to the rear and there is a holes that lets the coolant up between the cylinders, These holes are between each cylinder and are about 1" in diameter, Gene has posted about this a few times and after taking mine apart I seen what he was talking about. Good Luck.
