No question is stupid if you don't know the answer. TA is a double clutch-planitary gear set up that allowed the tractor to reduce ground speed while maintaining forward motion. This gave you "more power" to get through hardpan, etc while plowing or doing other heavy tillage work. When you pulled the lever, it released the main clutch & engaged the smaller clutch that activated a gear reduction set up to put the tractor in "low range". You could do this without stopping & starting, which was a really big deal in the 1950's. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
