Correct procedure to stop engine is reverse of the starting procedure, however last thing is to close starting valves. I dont think you are doing this, it shouldnt run if you shut off ignition switch while its running on gas. I was around these when new and would move them in warehouse, 400/450 was same, to start you pulled the starting valve lever back, this released compression by the starting valves, put the throttle lever in idle, turn on ignition, engage starter, when it cranked up run for a minute or so, push valves lever ahead at same time pull down throttle lever, shut off ignition, now its a diesel, to shut it off reverse procedure. Dont leave start valves open or will warp them, then they leak all the time.
