Hey GC - Messing with the timing will have NO effect on shutdown dieseling (there's no spark after you push in the switch so spark timing is meaningless.) So set your distributor timing back to specification. Stuff that WILL help: Switch to cooler plugs (Champion D15 or equiv). Set the idle speed as low as possible (350 RPM). Adjust the carb idle mixture for best running, or just a bit lean. Run 89 or 93 octane gas instead of regular 87. Let the motor run at low idle for a minute or so before pushing the ign switch. Last resort (which I use on occasion): Put the tranny in 5th direct and stand on the brakes. Then push in the switch and drop the clutch - the engine WILL stop!
