I have a steering shaft that is hollow and is splined. I had to remove the steering wheel and the years and rust took its toll. Bottom lin is when I got the puller on it, I crushed what was left of the shaft. I got the wheel off OK, but now I have to fix the shaft. I have located a replacment steering box and shaft but they want big$$$. The shaft is splined as is the steering wheel. I can get a new steering wheel but doubt I can find a shaft with the same splines to weld on. Question: Would it be reasonable to have a machine shop weld on a threaded bolt to the shaft to bring it back to the correct length and machine in a woodruff keyway into the shaft and steering wheel. I would also have to have a plate welded on to keep the wheel from slipping down the shaft. What do you think...go that way or spring for the replacement steering box $250???
