I think it was about 16 or 18 gauge steel plate that we used to make the shims. We made them so that they fit the whole bottom part of the pedestal. Washers would have worked too, but I don't think they would give enough support.

Just expirament with some different thickness metals until you can adjust your valves.

BTW the different lengths of valves are 5 5/16 and 5 15/16 inch. That is over 1/2" difference!! I'm sure I have to have the right valves.
