If you have the timing set for top performance you will get backfireing. If you get it ideal and are working it hard enough you can get a red glow on the stack at night, and that won't hurt it either. I stoped in front of a country convenience one evening with a Chevy 427. Old Chevy had a habit of doing as your tractor does. When I was about 50' from truck and just to doorstep, The old Chevy backfired and sent flame 3' out exhaust. A lady in entrance to store yelled,"he's got a gun." From her view point I was directly inline with flame. Every one in the store had a great laugh, except propritor. He didn't see the humour.
