SMOKIN' Super M

I have a 1953 Super M that I have finally got running for the first time in a year and a half. The gas is two and half years old, which doesn't help, but it runs like a top. It only runs under choke at the moment, and runs rough when I close the choke. When it runs, a solid column of gray smoke barrels out the top, and fills a 30x50 shed in 2 minutes. Doubtful it is oil burning, but I would like a confirmation from somebody that it is just my really old gas and not anything else. Just changed the oil, and it didn't look that bad but I didn't know so I just changed it. GAS STINKS. I forgot to mention. It doesn't have much of a gas smell anymore. Thanks in advance.
