Scott: It is not uncommon for the transmissions to make a growling noise. Generally it will be worse in the lower gears. They should never make a grinding noise. Pull off the transmission cover and see what you can see. You may get a surprise. If you see gound up pieces of metal everywhere you'll be glad you looked. Third and fouth use the same slider gear but it engages internally for fourth. If the noise is in fourth only I would suspect the constant mesh gear is very worn. If possible, have someone experienced with Farmalls listen to it. They are not hard to find, a lot of old farmers are around.
