My dad (80 yr old) says when they were plowing they always used "tractor fuel" as he calls it, about no 1 diesel because it gave the tractor more horsepower, not less. He says there was a noticeable difference and his dad would get on the boys for trying to use gasoline and could tell by how many acres they had gotten plowed. The downside to using tractor fuel was if you killed it without switching back to gasoline you had to drain the carburetor and crank until you were firing on gasoline. Hand cranking a hot tractor with the plugs fouled with diesel is not much fun. So another feature of distillate tractors is the brass drain valve on the carburetor.
