I assume that you must still have the front cover loose so that you can see that it isn't against the gear. This is normal. The pully is not the shaft size all the way through and when smaller portion comes up against the crankshaft that's it. There is about the measurement you menchioned between the front cover and the larger outer portion of the pully hub.
