I had to do a good bit of work on my ('46)H's transmission, too. It started with the fifth gear popping out of gear, but there was more wrong. Lemme see can I think of some stuff. When I put in a new main drive shaft (the top one, that goes through the housing and attaches to the clutch shaft, has the splines for fifth and the constant mesh gear for the counter shaft and the gear for the belt pulley) it wouldn't mesh right with the constant mesh gear- would bind up. Wound up putting the old shaft back in. It didn't seem like the splines were much worn, mostly the teeth in the sliding gear. All the gears showed a lot of wear, teeth graound down from abusive shifting. I really wish I had replaced them all but I was running out of time and money. One day one will fail, then I'll have to. Any gear you replace on the top shaft you ought to replace on the bottom, of course I didn't do that with fourth gear on mine, but I know I shoulda. The bottom shaft is a lot more work to take out than the top, and I think the gears are pressed on it. I was afraid I would have to get a real shop to take them off and put the new ones on. It's easy for me to say,"Long as you've got it apart, fix everything." I know I wish I had. Now everytime I start it up I think, "Boy, I shoulda...."
