You don't need to use ether if everythings OK. But a wipf of it won't hurt anything. An engine takes 3 things to run. Spark, Compression, and Fuel. You know you have spark. If you have compression and spark all that is missing is fuel. If you tractor was stuck I would suspect the rings might be stuck in the piston lands. Take the spark plugs out and with an oil can with gas in it, put a couple of shots of gas in each hole. Put the plugs back in and crank it. If it doesn't fire, you have a compression problem. If it does fire then you have a fuel problem.

Or you can use a compression tester.
