Farmall A Dist

Removed dist cap from my 1947 Farmall A. Directly behind the rotor is a small plate held on by two screws, I removed the plate to grease and after installing it back the Tractor will not start. The plate has a gear behind it. It can be installed in different positions, What is the correct way of finding the right position of the gear in the dist.
