I had the same symptoms, went through the same routine. However, being of the service technician mentality, figured I needed to look deeper into the starter. Discovered that the copper contact that is on the starter itself would move just slightly. By taking the starter apart, one can see that contact is held in place by a nut on the inside of the housing. Noticed that when wiggling/moving that contact, the solder joint that secures the heavy wires (actually more like flat bus bars on my starter) that go to the field windings was bad. I suspect that heat from the contacts over the years (resistance = heat) made a cold solder joint. So, first I held the contact straight and tight on the outside and tightned the nut on the inside. Then I resoldered the field wires to the contact. A soldering iron was not hot enough, so used a small butane torch (my Weller "port-a-sol" with the soldering tip removed). I reassembled the starter, filed and cleaned the contact on top of the starter, installed a new starter switch. Works like new!
