I have been reading on here the last few days and there has been some questions on what a T/A does or is, maybe this will help. the t/a allowed operation in either regular(direct) drive from the engine to the transimission or with a reduced-gear drive ratio of 1.482 to 1. When in t/a the travel speed was reduced 32% and pulling ability increased 48%. this gear reductionis accomplished by transmitting engine power to a primary and secondary sun gear and three compound planet gears. it is operated by a spring loaded clutch via the hand lever. whe in direct drive(control lever forward) the TA clutch is engaged causing the primary sun gear and planet gear to turn as a unit. the primary sun gear and compound planet gears cannot turn in relation to each other. this causes the secondary sun gear to turn at the same rate of speed. the secondary sun gear and transimission driving gear all turn togeather. if the lever is pulled back the ta clutch is released, now the planet carrier no longer turns with the primary sun gear and shaft the gear reduction of the sun and planet gears tends to reverse the rotation of the planet carrier. to prevent this an overrunning clutch is used, the overrunning clutch will allow the carrier to turn freely in the engines rotational direction but holds the unit stationary when it tries to turn in opposite direction. since the carrier is being held still the sun gear turns the compound planet gear shafts. use of the 2 different sized gears on the planet shafts provides double reduction. The secondary now turns the transimission driving gear at a slower speed. The TA only offers engine brakeing transimission if the lever is in the forward(direct) position. If the lever is in the TA position a down hill runnaway could occur. Also never move the lever from the TA to the direct drive position while traveling down hill, overspeeding of the TA can occur and possibly disintegrate, resulting in a loss of operator control. Hope I was of some help. john

Pitfalls of Tractor Engine Rebuilds - by Chris Pratt. The first pop after you have put the machine together with your own hands is exciting and pleasing. The whole experience can be marred if one moves too fast and makes too many assumptions that they can just use "as is" some parts they should be closely scrutinizing and possibly attended to. In such cases, rework makes what could have been a fun project turn into an irritant or even a nightmare. Minor Irritants To give you an example of an minor but irritating proble
