Probably going to run this one into the ground, but there were (are) at least 4 types. 1. Old style that stops when engine clutch is depressed, cannot shift gears until the shaft stops turning (at least not with a brush hog). On letter series prior to SMTA. 2. Independent PTO, has its own clutch, I understand it is "independent" of the engine clutch as you said. I have not used one of these, should be able to shift gears with PTO engaged. 3. "Live" PTO with 2 stage clutch. 1st stage stops tractor, 2nd stage stops PTO. Can shift gears with PTO running 4. "live" PTO that uses single stage engine clutch -- clutch must (or should) be depressed before engaging PTO. PTO continues to run with clutch depressed as with independent PTO, or with 2 stage clutch depressed to 1st stage. Can shift gears with PTO running. In my opinion the live PTO with 2 stage clutch would be best because in case of any kind of problem my reaction is to stomp on the clutch as far as it will go and stop everything, while stomping on the brakes with the other foot if need be. I have spent many hours on a IH 444 with a PTO driven sprayer. Stop tractor, forget to stop PTO or shut of sprayer valve--100 lbs/Acre of some herbicide in one spot.
