Do not use ether to start your MD on diesel. If you do you stand a good chance of cracking the lands between piston rings. If your electrical system is in good shape your MD should fire on the first or second revolution. I have three of these gas/diesel engines, a 600D, 400D and a TD9. As far as starting them on diesel when they are warm, you can if they are good and warm. When they are warm they really start easy on the gas cycle and I think it puts less strain on your starter.
