Fan spindle

The generator belt on my 100 broke(it finally wore out). Following the instructions in the manual, I tried to loosen up the fan spindle so I could slide it down and install the new belt, but I can't get it to budge. Which way do you turn it to loosen it?? I'm hesitant to really put a lot of oomph on a wrench for fear of breaking something. I've been spraying it with PB Blaster to loosen it, but no luck so far. Any help is appreciated!
