284 IH trouble...

Yeah this doesn't sound healthy at all, here is what happened... I was mowing the pasture when the engine itself started smoking, I immediately drove it back to the house, as I put it in high 3rd the engine starting making a slapping metal sort of sound, the smoke on the engine smelled like oil. I didn't get a red oil light or a yellow engine overheating light. I drove it up to the house, let it sit for awhile and checked the water level (fine) and the oil level (low but nothing too bad) I opened up the oil fill cap and the engine started smoking like crazy. I have no idea what to look for as wrong etc. This tractor is our everything tractor, and pretty much has had almost everything rebuilt or replaced on it, so junking it is not really an option nor in the budget, any suggestions as to what to look for would be greatly apreciated.
