Super M Gear shift

My M has excessive movement in the gear shift lever. I pulled the cotter key,raised the spring and cap. It was full of dirty dried grease. I tried to drive out the cross pin and it wouldn`t move with what I thought to be enough force so I quit. Is there something else or did I quit too soon. I have been told if I remove the lever and build it up with weld on the end it will solve the excess motion. As usual all coments are greatly appreciated.
