There are several possibilities here. If it smells like gear oil (a distinctive smell, very unlike hydraulic oil) it might be the plug at the bottom of the steering column shaft. It is about a 2 inch diameter sheetmetal plug much like a freeze plug. It could also be transmission oil from a bad transmission cover gasket. That would probably be Hy-Tran, but could be gear oil, depending on what is in the tranny. The only way for it to leak there, though is if it gets sloshed onto the cover, so the leak would probably be minimal and infrequent, so I would think that's not the case for you. The most likely is a hydraulic oil leak from the power steering, first check the connections, then the hoses and steel lines, and only after you are satisfied that those are okay look into the valve body (steering column) and cylinder seals. It's not a real tough job, but you end up feeling like you've taken the whole danged tractor apart to get at it. You need to remove the steering wheel, hood, dash, air cleaner, and gas tank and tank mount to get at the power steering unit. I haven't had the valve body or cylinder apart, but other than having lots of little parts to keep track of, it didn't look to be a big job.

We arrived hoping to meet up with a man we knew had over one
