How loud is the knock? We drove our farm truck with a knock from a piston pin for 4 years before having it fixed, and that engine was run hard. If it isn't much of a knock I wouldn't worry about it. The pistons will not come out the bottom of an H engine. Not even with the crankshaft removed - we pounded 3 stuck pistons out the bottom on one of my engines and they hit the main bearing saddles which ruins the pistons - gouges one side out. If you are just going to show the tractor and people won't normally hear it running, go ahead and remove the spark plug wire if it quiets the knock. Personally I wouldn't worry about it if you aren't working the tractor. Our 544 also has a knock and we keep running it that way too. As long as the knock doesn't keep getting louder I would not worry about it. If it gets louder, fix it before something else gets broken. Steven PS - As another side story, our 77 Ford pickup started knocking a few years back. We thought it was a broken skirt on a piston, but it kept getting louder until finally it levelled off. We drove it 1000 miles with a really loud knock - never went over 25 miles an hour. Finally took the engine apart and one rod bearing was completely gone, the piston came down so far it rubbed on the crankshaft counterweights. 3 more bearings were 1/2 gone.
