Mike - A compression test on a tractor before purchase is an excellent idea. It will give you a very good idea of the condition of the rings and valves and potentially save you alot of money for engine work. A compression test will tell you if the rings are worn (low psi), head gasket leakage (low numbers between 2 adjoining cylinders) erratic numbers can idicate a sticking or burnt valve. Those numbers along with examining the plugs and looking for smoke and its color can tell you alot. Thermometer sounds ok but I don't think it will give you as broad a picture of whats going on. I suggest a stem compression tester (cheap about 14.00 at Pep Boys). Hope this helps
