I have a '49 M with the tall oil filter and the shift pattern cast into the transmission cover. I am guessing that the dipstick you mentioned is for the belly pump, as my M has the dual petcocks on the oil pan for checking the oil level of the engine. Since the dipstick is long gone from my M, I can't help there. The oil filter housings and filters are interchangable. The tall type was the earlier version, as I understand it, but I'm not sure when the change took place. I still get the tall type filters from the local auto parts store, made by Wix. The counterman always asks if I need the tall or short type, so I'm sure the short ones are available too. Like Old Hand said, look for the date codes on major castings and they will give you some idea of your tractor's age. They look something like this: *6*12*R* where the * symbol represents what looks like a screw head and the numbers represent the month and day and the letter represents the year that the parts were cast. It will always be somewhat before the actual assembly date, but not by more than a couple of months. The W6 and the M used the same engine, so unless the engine came from a Super W6 it should be the same. Hope this helps, Phil

We arrived hoping to meet up with a man we knew had over one
