The choke restricts the airflow to an engine to make the air/fuel mixture rich (higher fuel content) for easier starting. Needing to keep the choke applied typically means there is a fuel delivery problem and the choke is limiting the airflow to achieve an acceptable mixture. Start at the gas tank and check the tank for rust, clean the sediment bowl, pull the drain plug out of the bottom of the carb and see if the gas runs out. Dirt anywhere in this system will cause what you describe. I hope this is helpful.
