There is carbon in the head...this carbon gets red hot... when you turn the ignition off ,the red hot carbon contiunes to fire the air /fuel mixture....as long as the engine turns over it will suck air and gas into the carb.the carb mixes the two togeather like it is built to do...so it keeps running....as the carbon cools the engine dies....some times it will then fire a cylinder that turns the engine backwards blowing the fuel mixture ,back through the carb. air intake tube into the oil bath and out the breather cap......the only way to get rid of the carbon is to remove the head and send it to a shop or you might try a sand blaster ....but you may as well get a valve job while you are at it.....THEN CHANGE YOUR BRAND OF FUEL.....

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
