Farmall A - Steering

I've got an A that needs some major work done on the steering wheel area. It looks like the previous owner welded on a piece of artwork to be used as a steering wheel. Can't tell if I'll be able to un-weld it and return it to somewhat original condition. Can anyone give me a measurement from any point as to how long the steering shaft is suppossed to be? I can't tell where the artwork begins and the shaft ends. And can I remove the steering shaft without completely taking apart the steering gear box. I've got the nut and bearing off but she still doesn't want to come out.
