IH 340 Utility Chatter Problem

I bought the IH tractor with a stuck valve. I got that loose and turned the engine with a crowbar at the flywheel. The starter is broken, so we tried towing it, but we get a sever chatter from the transmission (TA) or the rearend (hard to tell). Is it OK to tow an IH 340 Utility with a TA? What might cause the chatter, no matter what gear it is in? There is even some chatter when towing it in nuteral, but not as bad. It won't turn the engine over. I split the tractor. The throw-out bearing appears dry, but the clutch look ok. Thanks!
