What is this for?

I'm currently restoring an F30 and, while working on the engine, discovered a hole in the block under the magneto bracket right next to the cover plate on the front of the motor. This hole has no threads inside, and is directly opposite the camshaft. You can see it turning if you look in the hole. What is this for, and should I block it up? Any help on this would be appreciated.
