Will Different year parts fit different year tractors?

I have 1940, 1941, 1942, 1943, and 1947 Farmall H's laying around now. I have heard different stories about the parts being interchangeable. What is correct? Can I put 1940 gears into a 1947 tractor? I know the engines were a little different after a certain year. Are the trannies different as well? I guess it is like transplanting organs in Humans. Old 1940 gears will give new life to a 1947 whippersnapper on lifesupport. Fun Huh? I hope so! Thanks for all of your wisdom. I appreciate it. Scott
